If you are looking for a romantic place to unplug and share a special moment with the one you love, Valmalenco offers numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in unspoiled nature. Located in the heart of Valtellina, Valmalenco is a corner of paradise that invites you to enjoy a slow travel experience, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Visiting refuges is definitely the ideal choice for a rejuvenating break, providing the right mix of romance and relaxation among the mountains.
Why Choose Valmalenco Refuges for a Romantic Getaway

Valmalenco is known for its wild and authentic character, a place where nature is the absolute star of the show. Here, time slows down, the air is crystal clear, and the views open onto majestic peaks such as Pizzo Bernina and Pizzo Scalino. Visiting a refuge in this valley means tuning in to the surrounding environment, discovering the unprecedented pleasure of truly “wild” tourism.
Refuges in Valmalenco offer the chance to have authentic experiences, taste traditional dishes, escape crowded tourist circuits, and immerse yourself in an intimate and natural setting.
Refuges Easily Accessible From Our High-Altitude Accommodation
Choose high-altitude accommodation and find yourself completely immersed in the alpine landscape, just a stone’s throw away from some of Valmalenco’s characteristic mountain refuges.
The four refuges below are open in both summer and winter.
Rifugio Lake Palù

Situated in a lovely location near Lake Palù, this refuge is the perfect place to take a break after snowshoeing along the lake, whether as a couple or as a family.
In summer, the crystal-clear water is surrounded by green meadows and a lush larch forest. Fishing for Valmalenco trout (a Protected Geographic Designation product) is permitted with the proper license. In winter, the lake creates a magical atmosphere, perfect for romantic walks or a romantic snowshoe hike by moonlight.
The refuge is the ideal place to relax and recharge after a day of adventure, enjoying an intimate moment in a completely secluded setting, surrounded by a fairy-tale landscape.
If you want to have a truly exclusive experience in a historic lodge with views of Lake Palù at all hours of the day and night, you should consider the Ca’ Latrones Luxury Chalet, a true retreat into peace and complete isolation, just a stone’s throw from the lake and the alpine forest.
How to Get to Rifugio Palù
Rifugio Palù is located near the alpine lake of the same name, at an elevation of 1,965 meters. The refuge can be reached on skis and by snowshoe in winter, and by bicycle and on foot in the spring, summer, and autumn seasons.
Day hikers should carefully time their return to San Giuseppe via the lifts in Barchi. If you’re lucky, you may also be able to reach the refuge at night in winter, accompanied by our snowmobile. Alternatively, at sunset, you can get there on skis or snowshoes directly from the Casa Vacanza ai Barchi.
Rifugio Motta

Rifugio Motta is an excellent choice for those in search of a special vantage point. Located at an altitude of 2,236 meters, the view from its windows sweeps over the highest peaks of Valmalenco, providing a spectacular backdrop.
This refuge offers an atmospheric and intimate experience. The all-wood environment makes the spaces cozy, while the warmth of your hosts will make you feel truly part of an authentic community. The cuisine comprises typical traditional Valtellina dishes, seasonal menus prepared in accordance with nature and the chef’s sensibility.
How to Get to Rifugio Motta
The refuge is located directly on the Alpe Palù ski slopes, so it can be reached on skis during the winter. In summer, it is a stop on numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty.
For guests staying in the 2 Cuori in Pista Suite, the Casa Vacanza ai Barchi, or the Luxury Chalet Ca’ Latrones, the refuge can also be reached with an evening snowcat ride: Read more about the Snowcat Operator for a Night and Gatto Gourmet experience.
Agriturismo Malga Rundai

Although not an actual refuge, this family-run agriturismo is located at almost 2,000 meters altitude. It looks like a cozy lodge split over two levels with a large outdoor terrace. While it isn’t open for overnight stays, the food is excellent.
The products all come from the Malga Rundi farm, where the Sem family raises dairy and beef cattle. The kitchen serves dishes and wines from Valtellina and traditional Lombardy, from pizzoccheri to ossobuco and polenta, from house cold cuts and cheeses to buckwheat cake, just to mention a few. The Malga benefits from a sunny location along the slope up toward Cima Motta, not too far from Lake Palù.
How to Get to Agriturismo Malga Rundai
The Malga can only be reached on foot or on skis in the winter season. It is only a 15–20 minute walk from Lake Palù.
From Chiesa in Valmalenco, you can take the Al Bernina cable car, located in the hamlet of Vassalini. Località Prati Pedrana is about an hour’s walk away. The route is shorter for those staying at the Casa Vacanza ai Barchi, which is already halfway along the path leading to the Malga.
La Gusa

Located in Barchi, La Gusa also falls just outside the category of “refuge” and is actually a restaurant. As with the Malga, overnight stays are not available, but the location really is very convenient.
La Gusa is located directly on the ski slopes, built in perfect alpine style with an exceptional view. It is the ideal place for an aperitivo before the last skiing session.
While they are always open for lunch, we recommend calling ahead to confirm dinner availability.
How to Get to La Gusa
La Gusa is a few minutes’ walk from our Accommodations in Barchi, and it can also be reached by car in summer.
We recommend taking the cable car if you’re traveling from Chiesa Valmalenco. Visitors coming from San Giuseppe should take the Prati–Pedrana ski lift.
Other Refuges to Explore
Valmalenco is full of refuges, there are as many as 20, including Rifugio Sasso Nero (convenient for those who go skiing) and Rifugio Zoia (highly recommended for their snowshoeing). You can find the complete map here.

Among the most popular activities is snowshoeing, which allows you to explore snowy landscapes at a leisurely pace, immersed in the muffled silence that only the pristine mountains can offer. Then there are night walks for stargazing away from light pollution and trekking to discover the lesser-known valleys in the area.
Of no less importance are extreme sports such as ski mountaineering in winter and downhill skiing, climbing, and bouldering in spring and summer.
Whatever your favorite activity, a stop at one of the valley’s many refuges is not to be missed.
