This crystal-clear body of water, surrounded by majestic forests and mountains, is the perfect destination for nature lovers in search of an authentic experience, both in summer and winter. In this article you will find out how to get there, what to do, and where to stay at Lake Palù.

Where is Lake Palù?

Located about 1,922 meters altitude in the province of Sondrio, Lake Palù is a glacial alpine lake nestled among the wonders of Valmalenco. When there is no snow, Lake Palù can be reached via several hiking trails that start in Valmalenco. Here are the main trails:

  • Trail from San Giuseppe: The most popular trail takes about one and a half hours and is of medium difficulty, making it suitable for families with children accustomed to walking. Along the way you will find scenic viewpoints ideal for taking photos.
  • Trail from Chiesa in Valmalenco: You can also walk to the lake from Chiesa. This trail is more challenging, but offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.
  • Trail from Barchi: This is the same trail you take from San Giuseppe, but starting higher up. Guests at Holiday Home Barchi can leave directly from the accommodation and reach the lake on foot.
  • Lift: Anyone looking for a more comfortable option can take the Snow Eagle cable car from Chiesa Valmalenco to Alpe Palù. From there, it’s only a short walk to the lake.

  • Snowshoe hike from San Giuseppe: An easy route for those who want a leisurely snowshoe hike through snow-covered forests and enchanting views. We always recommend starting with proper equipment and checking snow conditions.
  • Chairlift from San Giuseppe: The Pedrana – Barchi – Palù chairlift takes you to Barchi, dropping you off halfway along the route from San Giuseppe for a shorter walk.
  • Snowshoe hike from Casa Vacanza Barchi: Guests of Casa Vacanza Barchi can depart directly from their lodgings for a snowshoe hike to Lake Palù.
  • Lifts from Chiesa Valmalenco: In winter, you can take the Snow Eagle cable car to Alpe Palù and walk to the lake.

Scenic Hike for Adults

For those in search of a more challenging hiking experience, we recommend a scenic hike that departs from the San Giuseppe chairlift parking lot. Starting from the dirt road, it winds along mountain trails to Lake Palù and Rifugio Palù. The first leg, from San Giuseppe to Barchi, shares the road with cars in summer, while the second leg of the trail passes through the forest.

  • Duration and Difficulty: Approximately two hours on foot; this trail is straightforward, although it has a more challenging elevation gain than the family trail. The hike is accessible to everyone, including children accustomed to walking.
  • Points of Interest: Along the trail, there are several viewpoints ideal for taking pictures and enjoying the vista over the entire Valmalenco.
  • Starting Point: San Giuseppe, 1,522 meters
  • End Point: Lake Palù, 1,950 meters
  • Return: In summer, on foot; in winter, by taking the chairlift to San Giuseppe
  • Period: Year round

Easy Hikes for Families

Families with children who are less accustomed to walking can also enjoy Lake Palù by joining the same route at a higher point, where it passes through Barchi.

  • Family Trail: Ascent to Barchi by chairlift in winter and by car in summer, followed by a short walk on even ground to the lake. This route is safe and enjoyable for the whole family.
  • Duration: About 50 minutes from the chairlift arrival point to the lake, an ideal route for a light hike.
  • Starting point: Barchi, 1,748 meters
  • End point: Lake Palù, 1,950 meters
  • Return: In summer, on foot; in winter, by taking the chairlift to San Giuseppe
  • Period: Year round

There is an alternative trail from Alpe Palù, taking the Snow Eagle cable car from Chiesa Valmalenco. The lake is just a few minutes from the cable car arrival point and vice versa. The trail is almost entirely level, with the exception of one very short stretch, so you can reach the lake with an easy 20- to 30-minute walk.
